Tuesday, May 28th, 2008 - Miss Doodle and the fancy handbags

Miss Doodle is wondering about the fashion, these days, at least here in Paris, the fancy handbags get bigger and bigger. Is this because we really need more ample bags to take more things with us? Or do we have to adapt and think about what on earth we can put into those bags to fill them? Cause they wouldn't look good with just a sketchbook, the keys and purse, would they?

Was sollen wir da bloss hineintun? Denn nur mit einem Skizzenbuch, dem Portemonnaie und der Sonnenbrille sieht so eine Riesentasche doch aus wie ein kaputter Luftballon!

Very cute. I haven't noticed any real people with big bags, but in several "New York" movies I saw recently I noticed a lot of big bags. Well, maybe they need to bring their pajamas sometimes, toothbrush and tea bags of their choice. Books to read, a DVD or two to watch somewhere boring. You know. That kinda thing. My purse is pretty small. Remember the purse post I did?

l am a bag addict and at one time was buying one a month but still looked for good value but a bargain in price as would not pay over the top prices, now l still get them but not so often. I bought one last week thats very different and its a circle made of petal shapes in different colours and it pulls together, l am thinking of copying it in felt in all shades but best bit was it was hidden on a shelf in a shop and when l got it out it was only £5 l got more excitment becaue of the bargain it was.
Very large bags Andrea came into the UK two years ago and are going away this year and the new ones are the other end of the scale and are very very small.

I adore handbags of any sort. As I have said, I shop pretty exclusively with my daughter who is a small handbag person. I tend to enjoy the larger ones since I will also sometimes use it for small purchases. But it is only really a medium bag I carry most of the time.

I saw an article where women were getting back problems from carrying such large bags on one shoulder. They would carry work shoes (if they walk to work, they would wear walking shoes, then change at work), books, water bottles, lunch, sometimes a change of some clothing items, it would double as a brief case for some, etc. And apparently some women needed items for emotional security like little photo albums, etc. I suppose if you are a commuter and are going to be away all day you just take what you think you are going to need.

I love handbags a lot, but nothing like the way my daughter loves them! Whenever my husband has to go to some place she has never been, she phones him up to say she would like for him to bring her back a handbag!

I Love this post...and I LOVE the painting of the gradually increasing sizes of the handbags!

Kim, how I'd love to look into the bags of the women I meet on the metro:) Once day you'll see me interviewing them: Hi Miss, could you please tell me what is in your handbag, I'm conducting an interesting study and translate it into watercolour paintings later:)

I think I'd get hit!:)

Isn't that the truth! Bags are huge nowadays--but I find, especially when I'm on the road, I need that--for all the stuff I have to carry--between cell phones, wallet, keys, sketchbook, GPS for finding my way around...iPod...sigh!....

This is funny Miss Doodle. I have a medium size handbag stuffed to the gills & try as I might I can never get rid of anything in it. AND it is heavy too. I could use a bigger bag but I would only fill it fuller. :)
I used to carry a bigger one when going to the movies so we could put in our sodas & food to sneak in with it. lol We don't go to the show much anymore now tho.

Well, I think it is a wonderful study...maybe we can think of another way to do it, though! :)

Well, Miss Doodle, I personally carry as small a bag as I can manage. If I had my way, I'd just use pockets, like men do. Although, I tell my husband that he should get a purse, he carries so much in his pockets! I carry a tote bag if I have to take more than I can fit into my tiny purse.

great study...
great paintings...
can we call it the evolution of handbags?... or of women's minds?

my motto regarding the handbags is:
the smaller they are, the higher you can fly!
;)
loved the bell-shaped pants with those signs...

Chris, LOL, I know, it has been a while now that I ogle at all the fancy bags I can find in the shop windows, but I can't get myself to buying a big one, out of the same fears! I know myself and I'm sure I'll fill it up to the brim!

This one really speaks to me today...as I was trying to cram enough yarn for two little sweaters to knit into one bag. I had to empty out one bag and stuff it all again into another just a few inches larger in each direction to get it all in something I can take on my trip. I want to be able to knit in the car...so sometimes big bags are essential. Ms. Doodle I think understands this.

Lynn, yes I think, we have to have an assortment of nice bags, from little to big, to be able to cope with all kind of necessities:)
This will give me a reason to go and buy one beautiful nice big bag soo,:)
(Although we have to think about the fact, that we have to take this bag along during our metro journeys...)
