Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 - Metroportraits - Connecting people

This little cute boy. There was another one like him right on the seat at his right, he looked like his twinbrother. There was only time to draw one of them.

People hide behind books, newspapers, magazines, mobile phones, earphones. Most of them are not aware of the fact that they are being drawn.

GROUP PORTRAIT

The young blond woman seemed totally absorbed. Earphones plugged in, eyes closed, did she listen to music or to a fascinating story, or to her lover's voice? Miss Doodle likes to observe without knowing.

The girl in red seemed pleased with the book she was reading, there was this beautiful little amused smile on her lips which created a dimple in her right cheek.

The guy with the glasses and the checkered shirt stared out of the car-windows. Or perhaps at his own reflection in the window wondering what has happened to his hair, when did it turn grey? Where has time gone.
Two minutes in the métro, enough to make an approximate portrait.

The man in the pink shirt with the white hair seemed to concentrate very much on some issue in his head or heart. Or on nothing. He posed like that for a long time, including at least 4 or 5 Métro-stops.

Your drawings reflect the "inside" as well as the "outside". Mission accomplished I would say.

These are really lovely! You are such a student of psychology with your Metroheads, too! I think that is something which makes these drawings so appealing...you can capture more than the images here.

You know I really love that little boy...and to think he has a twin! I think he probably reminds me of my daughter's best friend since kindergarten...an Asian/American who is now studying art :).

Thanks Andrea!

Kim, ONe thing I discover here is the pleasure of breaking down anonymity without getting too close to those people...So I do not disturb them, but I try to see what they are, which is impossible I know, but at least I have some minutes of uninterrupted interest for them. So the metro journey gets some sense.

Cris, in fact, sometimes those models (:) sit there for minutes in a row and they don't notice that I am drawing them. Sometimes they only stay one or two stops, then they get off, but rarely do they notice that I'm there with my inkpen and paper. I know the feeling myself, when you are "metroing" you try to become invisible and blind too!

Suki, it is right that one is a voyeur, but I feel as if I loved the people I draw, funny how some minutes of attention can change the attitude. Now I think that if a soldier would draw his ennemy before the fight, perhaps he wouldn't shoot him afterwards?

i love all your metroportraits... the way we can have a story just by looking at their faces...
since i was a student whenever i've been on a bus or metro, i've tried to draw people with words... i make their stories... my version of course!
